Read the specification carefully
A specification sheet places numbers beside familiar words: diameter, accuracy, power reserve, water resistance. The layout makes the figures look comparable before you know what they measure. A difference of five millimeters may matter greatly to one wearer. A difference of five seconds may mean almost nothing until you know whether it refers to a day, a month, an elapsed-time display or a particular test. Reading the sheet means recovering the question behind each number.
The three examples from Reading a Watch remain useful: Casio F-91W-1, Seiko SRPE55 and Citizen CA7058-55E. They offer digital battery operation, automatic mechanical operation and light-powered analog operation. Their documents are evidence about named models. They are not three universally recommended purchases, and a product page does not authenticate an individual watch offered by a seller.
Identify the document's subject
A model reference identifies a product or variant. A movement or module identifier points toward the mechanism and its operating instructions. These identifiers can differ, and a manual can cover several movements or case arrangements. Before applying a statement, establish which identifier it belongs to.
The Seiko SRPE55 product page identifies caliber 4R36. The linked family manual covers several calibers, but separates their setting instructions. Selecting a page because it is somewhere inside that manual is insufficient. A day-and-date procedure belongs to the corresponding movement; a diagram for another complication does not give this watch that complication.
Similarly, Casio's product page leads to module 593, while Citizen's selected model leads to B642. Keep both model and mechanism in your notes. When a seller supplies only a nickname, you do not yet have the same level of identification. When a seller supplies a reference, you still need to establish that it corresponds to the item being sold.
A document can also contain qualifications for optional construction. Instructions saying what to do if a crown screws down do not establish that every covered watch has such a crown. The reader must connect the conditional instruction to the actual case. The same principle applies to bracelet types, displays and additional functions.
Compare dimensions in matching directions
The Seiko page lists a 40.0-millimeter diameter, 44.6-millimeter lug-to-lug span and 11.5-millimeter thickness. The Casio page gives length × width × height as 38.2 × 35.2 × 8.5 millimeters. The Casio's first number is not a circular diameter. A comparison that simply places 40 beside 38.2 has discarded the direction being measured.
Make a small drawing or table that preserves the labels. The comparison can then say that the listed Casio width is 35.2 millimeters, while the round Seiko case diameter is 40.0. It can separately compare listed length or span, while acknowledging differences in geometry and measurement convention. Do not turn a rectangle and a circle into equivalent shapes by giving them a shared column heading of size.
Attachment width answers another question: which connection dimensions are involved? The Seiko's 20-millimeter spacing does not tell you its overall length on the wrist. Nor does it establish that every nominally 20-millimeter replacement attachment will fit its case, spring bars and intended use appropriately. A matching headline dimension is a starting point for compatibility, not proof of the complete connection.
The course's original fit guide helps you organize the missing evidence. A side view can reveal underside shape and crown projection. An articulation view can show where a rigid link begins to bend. A photograph with a ruler may clarify a measurement, but perspective can still distort the result. Ask how a dimension was taken when the difference is important to the decision.
Weight describes an assembly
The product pages list 21 grams for the Casio and 142 grams for the Seiko. That is a comparison of the documented watch assemblies, not a measurement of resin versus steel in isolation. Case size, bracelet construction, movement and other components all contribute. The result can inform a preference for a light object without supporting a universal material ranking.
A used bracelet may have links removed, making the delivered assembly different from the catalogue configuration. If the actual fit and mass matter, ask what is included and how the measurement was made. Missing links can also introduce a separate cost or availability problem. A watch can look complete in a photograph while arriving with insufficient adjustment range for the buyer.
Titanium presents a common interpretive trap. A manufacturer's comparison between treated titanium and steel does not provide the weight of every finished titanium watch. The Citizen CA7058-55E page identifies its material system and 44-millimeter width, but the accessible specification does not supply every dimension or an assembly mass. Leave those fields unknown rather than calculating an invented watch weight from a material slogan.
Whether a particular mass feels comfortable depends on its distribution, attachment and wearer. A heavier object can be stable on one wrist and awkward on another. The specification narrows the question; it does not complete the wearing experiment. That distinction should remain visible when you move the numbers into a decision table.
Accuracy needs units and conditions
Casio gives an accuracy specification of ±30 seconds per month at normal temperature in the module guide. Seiko's 4R specifications describe a factory-adjusted daily range of +45 to −35 seconds under stated temperature and wearing conditions, with further qualifications about actual use. The different periods and conditions must remain attached.
These are not measurements of the particular watches on a seller's desk. A watch operating within a broad specified range might perform much closer to the reference in one person's routine. Another specimen might need attention. The published range helps establish expectations; an actual observation record helps establish the behavior of the specimen under the recorded conditions.
Suppose an invented watch is set to a reference on Monday and is twenty seconds fast on Tuesday, forty seconds fast on Wednesday and sixty seconds fast on Thursday. If the readings occur at equal daily intervals and no setting occurred between them, the observations suggest a gain of about twenty seconds per day over that interval. They do not establish the exact cause or its behavior in every position and temperature.
Now suppose Tuesday's reading is twenty seconds fast and Wednesday's is fifteen seconds fast. The watch remains ahead of the reference but has lost five seconds relative to it during the interval. Calling it a watch that always gains because both readings are positive confuses offset with rate. This is why service questions need dates, intervals, setting events and conditions rather than a single complaint that the watch is fast.
Resolution is a different number
A stopwatch showing hundredths of a second has a display resolution of one hundredth. That figure identifies the smallest increment represented, not the accuracy with which a person can press its buttons at the beginning and end of an event. The watch's ordinary timekeeping specification and the user's timing uncertainty are separate matters again.
Imagine timing a forty-second task by hand. The display may provide many digits, but a delayed start or stop can affect the result more than its last digit. Reporting 40.17 seconds preserves the display reading; claiming the event duration is known to within a hundredth requires evidence about the complete measurement. More digits do not eliminate human reaction or ambiguity about the event's boundaries.
Capacity also matters. The selected Casio's stopwatch reaches 59 minutes 59.99 seconds. The Citizen B642 manual describes a chronograph measuring up to sixty minutes in 0.2-second units. Neither description should be converted into a promise to record an uninterrupted multi-hour event without considering how the device handles the limit. The owner's task, rather than the most impressive small increment, determines whether the function is suitable.
This is a useful place to notice conflicting documentation. Citizen's promotional paragraph uses a sixty-second phrase, while its technical information and the linked B642 guide establish the sixty-minute capacity. Record the discrepancy and use the more specific operating evidence. Do not hide the conflict by silently choosing whichever number makes the product seem better.
Reserve is measured from a starting state
Power reserve describes a period of operation under specified starting and operating conditions. Approximate forty-one-hour reserve for the selected Seiko assumes the relevant wound state. It does not promise forty-one hours after any amount of wear. A person who moves little while wearing the watch may supply less energy than another person's routine.
Mara's Friday-to-Monday interval is sixty-two hours. Even a fully wound forty-one-hour watch would reach that approximate duration on Sunday at eleven in the morning if set aside Friday at six in the evening. Monday morning lies another twenty-one hours away. This original calculation does not predict the exact stopping moment of a specimen. It shows that the published duration does not support the desired unattended interval.
Battery-life estimates answer a longer-term but similarly conditional question. The Casio guide's approximate duration assumes specified alarm and light use. A unit that has already spent time in storage does not necessarily arrive with the whole nominal interval remaining. The age and condition of the installed cell can be unknown even when the watch looks unused.
Citizen's B642 manual distinguishes energy sufficient for a day, energy sufficient to restart a depleted watch and a full charge. Those are different endpoints. Seeing hands move after exposure to light does not establish that the full reserve is available. A claim of light-powered operation also does not establish maintenance-free operation. The relevant ownership question is whether the charging routine and later service needs fit the buyer.
Water resistance is not a destination
A pressure-related marking must be read with the manufacturer's conditions of use. It is not an invitation to take a watch to a depth that resembles a number on the dial. Case design, intended activity, present condition and the operation of crowns or buttons all matter. This course assigns no home immersion or pressure test.
The Seiko family manual's water-resistance table separates an ordinary water-resistant marking from higher ratings and explicitly restricts the ordinary category's use for swimming. The SRPE55's listed 10-bar rating must be connected to its applicable instructions and current condition. It does not turn the model into a scuba-diving instrument. A diving requirement deserves equipment and documentation appropriate to that activity.
A used specimen adds a further question. The original rating describes its intended performance, while seals, damage and prior opening can affect its present ability to resist water. A seller's statement that it was never taken swimming does not establish the condition of the seals. A recent, relevant professional assessment can provide evidence; a photograph of a clean case cannot.
The attachment can impose different limits from the case. A material that suffers from repeated wetting may make a combination unsuitable for the buyer's routine even when the case has an appropriate rating. Treat the delivered watch as an assembly. In chapter five, this same habit will prevent a generic cleaning instruction from being applied to an unsuitable object.
A price is part of an offer
On September 14, 2026, the Seiko US product page displayed USD 315 for SRPE55. This is a dated manufacturer-page price, not a guaranteed checkout total, stock promise or universal price from every retailer. The Citizen page displayed Sold Out without an accessible current price in the extracted record. The accessible Casio US page likewise did not supply a usable price. An empty price field is unknown, not zero.
A comparison can proceed with that incompleteness. Record the specification evidence now and obtain a complete offer before making a purchasing decision. The eventual total may include shipping, tax, necessary fitting or an attachment. If the seller is in another market, currency and terms must be identified rather than assumed to match the manufacturer's regional page.
Record the date of the offer as well as the date you read it. A saved screenshot may preserve an earlier promotion after the seller has changed its terms. If two quotations are separated by several months, the comparison should not imply that both can be accepted today. An unavailable offer can remain useful historical evidence about price, while failing to provide an actionable choice for the buyer.
A discounted offer is not automatically better than a higher-priced one. The items may differ in condition, included links, warranty route or return terms. A fair comparison identifies those differences before treating the price gap as savings. The next chapter examines exactly those differences between new, used and vintage ownership.
Turn the sheet into a question list
For every important row, write what it answers and what remains unknown. Diameter answers one geometric question. A rate specification establishes a conditional expectation. A power-reserve figure helps evaluate a storage interval. A water-resistance marking directs the reader to applicable use guidance. A listed price begins a cost calculation. None answers every question in Mara's brief.
The result should be a compact evidence table with a few unresolved fields, not a competition to collect the largest numbers. Mara can now reject a claim that any brief wearing period guarantees a full weekend's reserve. She can preserve her interest in an analog watch while recognizing that digital operation may better match one preference. She can also postpone a choice until the actual offer and fit evidence exist. Careful reading expands her options by making their consequences visible.
Application
Build a specification table for the three named models using the linked documents. Keep case dimensions labeled by direction, rate units and conditions attached, and unknown fields explicit. Include one documented conflict or qualification. For each row that matters to your chapter-one brief, write a question the specification answers and a question it cannot answer.
Calculate the Friday 6 p.m. to Monday 8 a.m. interval and compare it with an approximate forty-one-hour reserve. Then interpret the invented offset log in the accuracy section. Do not diagnose a movement fault or convert the exercise into a purchase recommendation.
Check your understanding: Why does a hundredth-second stopwatch display fail to prove that a hand-timed event is known to within a hundredth of a second?
Expected answer: Display resolution is only the smallest represented increment. Start and stop timing, the event definition and the device's actual performance also affect measurement uncertainty. The displayed digits do not remove those other sources of error.
