A History of Time on the Wrist

Before the wristwatch

A police officer receives a watch from the jewelers whose shops he helps protect. The gift tells the time, but that is only part of what has changed hands. It acknowledges service. It can be worn and shown. It may become something a family keeps after its first owner dies. A history that describes only the mechanism will miss most of this transaction. A history that describes only its symbolism will miss why a portable timekeeper was worth giving.

The Smithsonian records just such a gift: Thomas Oriani, a Washington, D.C., policeman, received a Waltham watch from jewelers on his Seventh Street beat at Christmas in 1890. The museum identifies the movement's maker and preserves the names of the family members who gave the object to its collection. That combination gives us a machine, an occasion and a route into a museum. It does not give us every thought Oriani had about his present. Smithsonian object record.

This course follows watches through changes in where they were worn, how they were made and what people expected from them. Its central question is larger than who invented the wristwatch. How did a timekeeper become an everyday object of coordination, work, fashion and identity? We begin with objects that could be carried before the wrist became their usual location. They will also teach us how to handle evidence for the rest of the course.

A little mechanism, enough for history

A mechanical watch needs stored energy, a regulated sequence of movements and a way to display the result. A wound mainspring supplies energy. Gears carry motion through the movement. An escapement permits the train to advance in small steps while helping sustain an oscillator. The oscillator repeats a motion; the hands present accumulated time in a form a person can read. The case protects these parts, while the attachment determines how the object travels with its owner.

These functions are related but separate. A spring can have ample energy while a badly regulated watch gains time. An accurate movement can sit behind a difficult dial. A legible dial can be attached inconveniently. A handsome case can surround a mechanism that no longer runs. Readers who want the complete illustrated account can use How a Wristwatch Works. Here, mechanism matters because a change in one function can alter the use of the whole object without transforming every other part.

Portability raises an especially interesting problem. A clock supported in one position has a different working life from a watch that is carried, turned and jolted. It also occupies a different social position. The public clock must be approached or heard. A portable watch can be consulted away from it. Yet portability does not make the watch independent of other clocks: someone must establish its correct indication and check whether it has drifted. The object carries time through space while retaining a relationship to a reference elsewhere.

Consider a hypothetical traveler who sets a watch before leaving home. If it then gains two minutes in a day, winding it again supplies energy but does not erase that error. Setting it to a trusted clock corrects the displayed time at that moment. Adjusting its rate addresses the tendency to gain. These are three different interventions. The numbers are invented to explain the distinction, not measurements of an early watch. Later chapters will show how institutions organized such comparisons.

The early object is already complicated

The British Museum holds an Isaac Simmes watch made in London and dated 1600–1610. It combines an alarm with a mechanism that strikes once each hour. Its gilt-brass case carries engraved decoration, and its dial has an inner alarm-setting scale as well as the hours. The museum identifies it as a verge watch from before the balance spring. Its account also records later replacement parts. This surviving machine is therefore evidence of both early construction and subsequent intervention. British Museum, 1894,0720.1.

Look at the museum's third image, which shows the face. First locate the outer Roman numerals. Then notice the smaller inner numbered ring. Without the catalogue, a viewer could mistake several concentric scales for elaborate ornament or read them as modern minute markings. The description tells us that one scale sets an alarm. Observation identifies the arrangement; documentation supplies the function. Neither should substitute for the other.

An alarm changes the relation between person and object. A displayed time waits for someone to look. An alarm can call attention to a selected moment. The distinction persists in connected watches centuries later, but it would be misleading to call this early object a primitive smartwatch. Similar functions do not establish identical technology, users or meanings. We can make a useful comparison without erasing the very differences a history is meant to explain.

The decorated case invites another correction. Utility and ornament are not necessarily opposing goals. A person can want to know the time and want the object to express wealth, taste, devotion or affiliation. An exterior can conceal a mechanism, display a story or protect a dial. Treating all decoration as an irrelevant shell would make the historian discard evidence that its maker and owner chose to preserve in metal.

That does not mean we can confidently read an owner's mind from ornament. A scene may have been selected by a buyer, recommended by a maker or supplied as part of a familiar decorative pattern. To establish a particular motive, we would need correspondence, an order, a diary or other evidence that connects the person to the choice. The sound conclusion is narrower: the object makes visual and social communication available alongside timekeeping.

Surviving parts have different dates

Museum dates often refer to the object's initial making, not the birth date of every component now attached to it. Springs break. Cases wear. Owners commission alterations. Repairs can replace a hand, a gear or a substantial section of a mechanism. If a later component improves performance, measuring the present object would not automatically tell us how it performed when new. Nor would removing every later change necessarily restore an original condition we know with certainty.

Imagine a catalogue entry for an invented watch dated about 1650. It lists a replacement mainspring, an eighteenth-century case and an unidentified later hand. A weak label would say that its present appearance shows exactly what people carried in 1650. A better label would distinguish the early movement from later modifications. An even stronger question asks why the object continued to be repaired. Continued use can itself be historical evidence, although the dates and reasons for each intervention may remain uncertain.

This is why the Simmes record's qualifications matter. They are part of the historical result, not obstacles to a satisfying story. A museum that identifies uncertainty gives readers a better basis for judgment than a confident caption that hides it. The existence of replaced parts does not make the whole object worthless as evidence. It changes the questions each part can answer.

We should also distinguish an inscription from an interpretation of it. We can record letters visible on a movement. Identifying the named maker, dating a business address and connecting a coat of arms to a household require additional knowledge. An attribution expressed as probable must remain probable in our account. Repetition by later writers cannot quietly upgrade it into certainty.

The nineteenth-century gift

Now return to Oriani's watch and inspect the Smithsonian's first photograph. The dial combines large Arabic hour numerals, a small seconds display and painted flowers. Its open cover and gold-colored surroundings make it visibly different from a plain modern field watch. Several layers of information occupy the same face: numerals and hands support reading, while flowers and decorative details contribute to its appearance. Do not infer its accuracy from the photograph.

Placed beside the earlier watch, it shows both continuity and change. Both are portable objects with carefully treated exteriors. Both combine a readable indication with visible choices about presentation. Their mechanisms, dates and documented associations differ. The comparison does not need a winner. Its point is to identify which features continued to matter while the circumstances of production and use changed.

The gift also complicates the usual story that industrial manufacture strips objects of personal meaning. A movement produced within a large manufacturing enterprise can enter an intensely particular relationship. Standardized production and individualized significance operate at different stages. One concerns how parts and products are made. The other concerns what happens when a person buys, gives, wears, repairs or inherits one of them.

We must be equally careful in the opposite direction. The existence of an industrial maker does not establish universal affordability. This specific gold-cased gift cannot tell us what an unskilled worker, a domestic servant or a rural household could buy. A history of access needs prices, wages, credit, retail distribution and evidence of actual ownership. The factory's output is not a census of the population's possessions.

Suppose an invented factory makes ten thousand watches in a year. Some are exported, some remain in stock and some are bought by people who already own watches. It would be wrong to infer that ten thousand previously watchless local residents gained access. Even a correct production count answers a different question from a household ownership survey. Keeping these measures separate will become particularly important when we reach quartz and luxury markets.

What kind of time did people need?

We often project the precision of our own appointments backward. But a timekeeper's usefulness depends on the activity it serves. An alarm may be helpful without displaying seconds. A person comparing elapsed intervals faces a different problem from someone coordinating arrival with another person. A machine's ability to maintain a rate is different again from the availability of an agreed standard across a region.

Here is a simple thought experiment. Two people agree to meet when their watches show twelve. Each watch runs steadily, but one was set ten minutes ahead of the other. The meeting can still fail. Better rate stability alone would not solve the disagreement. They need a shared setting procedure or an agreed reference. Conversely, two watches set together can gradually diverge if their rates differ. Coordination requires attention to both setting and continuing performance.

The need for a shared reference also changes who has authority. Who supplies the correct time? Who can question it? Who bears the cost of arriving late? A portable watch may help a worker check an employer's clock, while a timetable can make punctuality a condition of travel. These are possible relationships to investigate, not effects that every watch necessarily produced. We need documents showing how people actually used time in particular settings.

A history of watches therefore cannot be written entirely from watches. Timetables, work rules, advertisements, sales records, correspondence and photographs reveal activities the mechanism cannot report. The object may survive while its paper trail disappears. A rule may survive without the watches used to follow it. Productive historical work brings these incomplete forms of evidence together without pretending they fit perfectly.

Choosing evidence rather than collecting legends

For every object in this course, keep four dates separate when the evidence allows: manufacture, a documented event in its use, a later alteration and entry into a collection. An object made in one year can be given in another and acquired by a museum much later. A model's launch date is not automatically the manufacture date of every surviving example. A catalogue's publication date is different from all of them.

Keep location equally precise. A movement maker, case maker, assembler, retailer and owner may be in different places. A national label on the finished watch can conceal a chain of work across borders. Later chapters will examine such chains directly. For now, the practical habit is simple: attach each place to the activity it documents instead of describing an object as though a whole nation made it with one pair of hands.

There is one final limitation to remember. Museums hold objects that survived and were selected for collection. Precious watches, famous owners and technically unusual mechanisms may receive attention out of proportion to their place in ordinary life. That does not make them bad evidence. It means they cannot stand alone for everyone who lived at the time. An exhibition of six remarkable watches should acknowledge whose experiences are missing.

The two objects we have examined establish a useful starting point. Portable timekeeping was already bound up with attention, display and personal relationships before the wristwatch became common. What changed next was not simply the size of the mechanism. The organization of production, the circumstances of wearing and the reach of shared schedules all helped make time a more widely carried possession. We can now investigate those changes with a vocabulary for the machine and a disciplined way of reading its history.

Application

Compare the Simmes watch and Oriani's Waltham in 350–500 words. Use their linked records and photographs. Include one visible feature, one documented fact and one inference for each object. Explain a similarity that survives their different dates and a difference that matters to use. End with a question neither object record answers.

Model interpretation: The early alarm-setting scale and the later subsidiary seconds display organize different kinds of information. Their decorative treatment shows that appearance belonged within portable timekeeping, while the Waltham's documented gift identifies one particular social transaction. It would be unjustified to infer the two owners' exact daily routines, compare measured accuracy from photographs or treat either object as representative of all households.

For the final exhibition, start an evidence card with the object's title, collection identifier, qualified date, maker attribution, known use and source link. Leave an unknown field explicitly unknown. A strong card gives another reader enough information to locate the evidence and understand the limits of the caption you will eventually write.
