Understanding and Loving a Cat

Feeding a cat, rather than feeding a label

Two bags of cat food sit on the kitchen table. One promises ancestral nourishment beneath a photograph of a wildcat. The other has an unexciting label with a nutritional-adequacy statement and calorie information. The cat investigates the table, steps over both bags, and begins chewing the receipt.

The receipt must be removed, but the cat has identified a weakness in our shopping habits. Packaging is designed to persuade the person who pays. The animal needs a suitable supply of nutrients, an appropriate amount of energy, safe food, and a workable way to eat it. Those requirements overlap with some marketing claims and have little to do with others.

This chapter gives you a method for making and reviewing a feeding plan. It does not choose one universal product. Your cat's age, health, body condition, preferences, and household circumstances belong in the decision.

What obligate carnivore actually means

Cats have nutritional requirements shaped by carnivorous ancestry and metabolism. “Obligate carnivore” describes those biological requirements; it does not mean that any piece of meat is a complete diet. Muscle meat alone does not reproduce the nutrient balance required for long-term health.

Cornell's feline nutrition overview explains the importance of appropriate protein and other essential nutrients, including requirements that differ from those of people or dogs. A complete formulated cat food is designed around the overall nutrient supply. Adding supplements casually can disrupt rather than improve that balance.

Think of nutrition as a set of simultaneous constraints. Enough energy is necessary but insufficient. Enough of one nutrient cannot compensate for too little of another. A food can be palatable yet unsuitable as the sole diet. A treat can be useful in training without being a meal replacement.

This is why “the cat loves it” and “the ingredient sounds wholesome” are incomplete evaluations. Both observations can matter, but neither establishes nutritional adequacy. If you want a home-prepared diet, work with a veterinarian with appropriate specialist nutrition expertise and follow a properly formulated recipe exactly. A collection of individually appealing ingredients is not the same thing as a tested formulation.

Dog food should not become a cat's routine diet simply because the cat sometimes steals it. The practical solution in a mixed household is to manage access and arrange suitable separate meals, not to assume that a successful theft demonstrates nutritional equivalence.

Read the part of the label that answers the question

In the United States, look for the nutritional-adequacy statement and the life stage it covers. The FDA's explanation of complete and balanced pet foods describes the use of nutrient profiles or feeding trials under AAFCO procedures to support the claim. A product intended only for intermittent or supplemental feeding is not thereby suitable as the sole diet.

This gives you a first screening question: is the product intended to provide complete nutrition for this kind of animal at this life stage? Kittens, pregnant or nursing cats, and adults do not automatically have interchangeable requirements. Therapeutic diets belong in an individual veterinary plan.

Next locate the energy information and feeding directions. These help translate a product into an amount, but the printed portion is a starting point rather than a measurement of your cat's exact requirement. Record the unit carefully: calories per can, pouch, cup, kilogram, or gram are not interchangeable numbers.

Then investigate the manufacturer. The WSAVA food-selection tool suggests questions about qualified formulation expertise, quality control, nutritional information, and research. This is a way to assess evidence and transparency, not a WSAVA approval seal for individual brands.

Ingredient order can be informative about ingredients, but it cannot by itself reveal digestibility, final nutrient balance, or quality-control performance. A label can be accurate and still leave important questions unanswered. Your goal is to identify those questions rather than win a contest over the most attractive first ingredient.

A worked label comparison

Consider three fictional products. Product A is an adult-maintenance complete food providing 90 kilocalories per pouch. Product B is a complementary chicken treat providing 15 kilocalories per tube. Product C is a complete dry adult food providing 4 kilocalories per gram. These numbers are invented for arithmetic practice; they are not a feeding prescription.

Suppose a veterinary plan for a particular fictional adult cat allocates 210 kilocalories daily, with 200 from complete food and 10 from suitable treats. Two pouches of A provide 180. Five grams of C provide another 20. The complete-food allocation is therefore 200. A full tube of B would provide 15 rather than the allocated 10, so the owner must account for the actual amount instead of treating “one small tube” as nutritionally invisible.

The calculation is simple, but it reveals several common errors. Volume is not energy. A pouch and a cup are not equivalent portions. Different products can contain different energy per gram. Adding wet food to an unchanged dry-food ration increases total intake unless the quantities are adjusted.

The example also shows why the target must come from the individual plan. The arithmetic could be perfect while the target is wrong for the cat. Growth, activity, neuter status, health, and other factors influence requirements. We use observation and veterinary review to adjust the plan over time.

Use a kitchen scale for dry food when practical, because small amounts can be difficult to estimate consistently by eye. Keep the product's original calorie information available. If a formulation changes, revisit the calculation rather than assuming the old scoop remains appropriate.

Body weight is useful, but it is not the whole body

Two cats of the same weight can have different frames, fat stores, and muscle condition. Following weight alone can therefore miss important changes. Body-condition assessment concerns fat stores; muscle-condition assessment concerns muscle. They answer related but distinct questions.

The WSAVA feline body-condition chart combines visible shape and palpation. Ask your veterinary team to show you how to assess your own cat rather than guessing from fur or one photograph. Long coats can obscure shape, and an older cat can lose muscle while retaining excess fat.

For home monitoring, use consistent methods and record trends. A single measurement can vary with the scale, timing, and technique. Repeated comparable observations are more useful. If weighing is stressful, discuss another workable method; a monitoring routine should not become a weekly wrestling match.

Weight management should be gradual and planned. Do not abruptly remove food or assume an overweight cat can safely go without eating. The Merck Veterinary Manual's account of feline hepatic lipidosis describes serious liver disease associated with inadequate intake and underlying problems. A cat that stops eating needs prompt veterinary advice, especially if it is unwell or eating much less than normal. Do not wait for a dramatic appearance or attempt force-feeding without veterinary direction.

The practical distinction is between controlling portions and withholding adequate nutrition. A thoughtful plan preserves both sufficient nourishment and opportunities for enjoyable eating.

Wet, dry, and the water question

Food format changes moisture, texture, energy density, storage, and convenience. Wet food contributes water with the meal. Dry food can suit some feeding devices and routines. A mixed approach can be workable when the total intake and nutritional suitability are accounted for. The choice should consider the individual rather than treating a format as a moral category.

Keep fresh water accessible regardless of food format. Offer stable, clean containers in usable locations. If experimenting with a fountain or a different bowl, keep a familiar water option available while you observe. A new device is only useful if the cat actually uses it and it can be cleaned properly.

Changes in drinking deserve context. A cat moved from dry to wet food may drink less from a bowl while receiving more moisture in food. A cat drinking substantially more on an unchanged routine may need assessment. Record the diet and circumstances alongside the observation rather than interpreting the bowl in isolation.

Ordinary dry food should not be assumed to provide adequate dental care merely because it is crunchy. Dental care has its own evidence and individual plan. We address teeth and cooperative care later. Marketing one feature of food should not cause another part of care to disappear.

Storage is part of feeding. Follow the manufacturer's directions, retain the product identity and lot information, and clean bowls and feeding equipment. Treat opened wet food as perishable. Do not leave a wet-food puzzle out indefinitely because the activity is enriching; use a suitable portion and a sensible cleanup routine.

The place and rhythm of meals

A nutritionally appropriate meal can still be difficult to access. A cat may hesitate because another animal is nearby, the bowl sits beside a loud appliance, or reaching it requires an uncomfortable jump. “Food is available” does not establish that this cat can eat comfortably.

Apply these ideas to your actual household rather than forcing every cat into one schedule. Medical needs and the cat's demonstrated ability take priority over a fashionable feeder.

In a fictional two-cat home, Nori finishes first and moves toward Pip's bowl. Pip steps aside. The owner sees empty bowls and assumes both cats ate their portions. The observation does not support that conclusion. Separate feeding locations, visual separation, or appropriate access-controlled equipment can make individual intake easier to observe.

Start with the simplest arrangement that works. Two closed rooms for a brief meal may solve a problem more reliably than an elaborate device. If using an electronic feeder, introduce it gradually and verify that noise, access, and battery failure do not prevent eating. Technology can manage access; it cannot replace observation.

Food puzzles should begin easy. A cat unfamiliar with a device needs a way to discover food successfully. Do not make the entire ration inaccessible inside a difficult puzzle and call hunger motivation. Keep reliable access to adequate food while teaching the activity. Treats can have a job

A treat may reward a training step, support a positive association, or add enjoyment. Its small size does not remove it from the diet. The WSAVA cat-treat guide recommends keeping treats a limited part of intake and considering their suitability and safety. For a cat on a therapeutic diet, ask which rewards fit the prescribed plan.

One useful option is to reserve some appropriate complete food for activities. The reward need not come from a separate luxury category if the cat values it. Conversely, a highly valued suitable treat can help with a small training step when its contribution is accounted for.

Make the household's system visible. If three people each provide “just a little,” the cat receives the total of all three intentions. A shared daily allocation or simple note can prevent accidental duplication. This is household coordination, not a reason to make affection bureaucratic.

Food is not the only possible reward, but do not assume touch is rewarding because you enjoy giving it. A reward is defined by its effect on behavior and the individual's response. Play, access, and food can each matter in different contexts. The training chapter will help you choose and test them.

Rawness, novelty, and confident claims

Raw food is not automatically safer or more appropriate because a cat is carnivorous. Nutritional adequacy and microbiological safety are separate questions. The FDA's H5N1 guidance for pet-food manufacturers identifies hazards associated with relevant uncooked or unpasteurized ingredients. This adds to the need for a careful food-safety assessment; it does not make a raw label a benefit.

Similarly, novelty is not evidence. Words such as ancestral, human-grade, grain-free, or holistic may invite questions, but they do not answer the whole nutritional problem. Ask what claim is being made, what evidence supports it, whether that evidence applies to cats, and whether it applies to this cat's circumstances.

Diet transitions should be planned around tolerance and adequate intake. A gradual introduction is often useful, but the pace must respond to the cat and any veterinary instructions. If the new food is refused, do not turn the transition into a standoff. Preserve appropriate intake and ask for advice.

Your final feeding plan should be legible to someone else: exact products, measured amounts, timing, locations, water arrangements, allowed rewards, storage instructions, and what changes require a call. The quality of the plan is measured in how well the cat is nourished and how reliably people can follow it.

Check your understanding: Two cats share bowls. Both bowls are empty, and one cat has gained weight while the other has lost weight. Why is “we are feeding the correct total amount” an incomplete answer?

Expected answer: The household total does not reveal individual intake or explain the weight changes. Observe and separate access so each cat's consumption can be assessed, check the measured food and treats, and arrange veterinary evaluation of concerning weight changes. Do not assume competition is the only possible cause.

Application

Create a feeding sheet for a fictional adult cat using the worked numbers in this chapter. Include the complete-food allocation, treat allocation, units, locations, storage, and a monitoring plan. Then adapt it for two household members who both feed the cat.

Model answer: Under the fictional veterinary target, two 90-kilocalorie pouches plus 5 grams of 4-kilocalorie-per-gram dry food provide 200 kilocalories of complete food. The separate 10-kilocalorie treat allocation must be measured using the chosen product's information. The sheet names who provides each meal, how used treats are recorded, and how intake and body condition will be reviewed. It explicitly labels 210 kilocalories as the supplied case target, not a recommendation for other cats.

Transfer question: Product C changes to 4.5 kilocalories per gram. Keeping 5 grams would now provide 22.5 rather than 20 kilocalories. The old quantity cannot be assumed equivalent. Recalculate within the individual feeding plan and verify the rest of the product's suitability.
